Small Step, Giant Leap: Celebrating Apollo at 40
| July 20, 2009 | to | September 9, 2009 |
Small Step, Giant Leap: Celebrating Apollo at 40
When: 20 July 2009 to 10 September 2009
Info: In July 1969, the world watched in wonder during the Apollo 11 mission as Neil Armstrong took “one small step”, becoming the first human being to set foot on the Moon. This historic spaceflight represented a “giant leap for Mankind”: the first time that human beings had explored another world in person. The Apollo 11 lunar landing was one of the most significant scientific and technological events of the Twentieth Century, and the program that made it possible inspired the best and brightest students to seek out careers in the exciting fields of space exploration, astronomy and aeronautical engineering.
In July 2009, the University of Sydney’s School of Physics and the Science Foundation for Physics will present an exhibition commemorating the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11’s historic lunar landing.
Combining contemporary artefacts and memorabilia, this display will present the history of the Apollo Project and explore the relationship between the US space program and the University of Sydney’s School of Physics.
Exhibition sponsored by the US Studies Centre and the NSW Office for Science and Medical Research.

‘Adrift’ Sculpture-Sound Installation
A work about water, drought, a landscape and a major city. By Alison Clouston and Boyd.
A response to ongoing drought in Australia and the struggle over water in the catchment of a major city. A flotilla of coracles – circular river-boats of ancient times – and a soundtrack following the movement of water through landscape and the human body. Painted birds, nestling or vanishing in the pelts, speak of vulnerable species and ecosystems. Adrift has a soundtrack that signifies the movement of water through landscape and the human body.

Roger Rassool Appears courtesy of The Australian Institute of Physics. Lawrence Krauss appears courtesy of National Science Week.
Physicist Dr Roger Rassool and his team from The University of Melbourne present a spectacular exploration of some of Einstein’s theories. Find out about surprising phenomena such as hover bikes, floating apples, bottomless pits, spontaneous combustion and glue made out of air. Intriguingly, there may even be an example of time dilation in action. The dazzling laser show will thrill the kids while the science will amaze the adults. An event for the whole family.

Sydney Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef exhibition
The higher order mathematics of hyperbolic space was once considered impossible to represent – until it was discovered that coral reefs were already doing the job. This large crocheted installation brings together science, art, philosophy and environment. Now, with no experience necessary, you can learn how to crochet a piece of ‘reef’ and have it added to the installation. Learn something new and become part of the exhibition.
A woolly celebration of higher geometry and feminine handicraft and a testimony to the disappearing wonders of the marine world. It was originally created by respected science writer Margaret Wertheim and Christine Wertheim of the Institute For Figuring in LA. See hyperbolic space represented in handmade stitches.
When: Friday 21 – Sunday 30 August
Where: Powerhouse Museum
Cost: Free with entry to Powerhouse Museum – Adult $10, child $5 more information available here:

Frontiers of Science
This brilliant science comic series appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald from 1962 to 1987.
A display of original artwork and reproductions from the Frontiers of Science comic series. This long-running comic strip covered space travel, Relativity, climate change and dozens of other science issues at a time when the first satellite was being launched, humans were landing on the moon, and the nuclear arms race was in full swing. The comic strip was the result of an unlikely alliance between two men from utterly different worlds. Professor Stuart Butler was a theoretical physicist at the University of Sydney and Bob Raymond was a journalist, writer, filmmaker and executive producer of ABC TV’sFour Corners program. The black and white artwork has a stunning retro look and the comics makes fascinating reading today, 40 years on. The comic strip ran for 30 years, was syndicated to hundreds of overseas newspapers and translated into 12 languages.
When: August 10 – August 29: Open weekdays only, except also open Saturday 29 August.
Where: ABC Atrium, 700 Harris St, Ultimo
Cost: Free – no booking required
Artwork kindly on loan from Rare Books and Special Collections, University of Sydney Library.
